Mossadegh Backer Is Chosen
Speaker Of Iran Parliament

UPI — August 19, 1953 TEHRAN, Iran (UP)—Abdullah Moazzami, a supporter of Premier Mohammed Mossadegh, was elected speaker of Parliament today in place of Seyed Kashani, a leading critic of the Mossadegh regime.

Moazzami was elected by a vote of 41 to 31, with one abstention. A bare majority of the 136-member Majlis (lower house) participated in the election.

A few hours earlier, Kashani—who is a Moslem priest as well as a politician—had declared that Mossadegh will be condemned to death “if he continues trying to set up a dictatorship.”

Kashani, [Ayatollah Seyed Abolghassem Kashani] a persistent opponent of Mossadegh’s demands for total power, charged that the premier has been intimidating deputies in an effort to dissolve parliament.
