After Premier Mossadegh was overthrown in Iran, this blithe commentary ran on the front page, above the fold in Trouw (“Faithful”) newspaper in the Netherlands. Read the original in Dutch, or an English translation below it.

Tranen

[Nederlandse politici Carl Romme, Jaap Burger, Jan Schouten, Hendrik Tilanus, Pieter Oud]

Deze overdenking dankt u aan het Augustusweer.

Tears

WITH all the objections we had to him, the weeping Mossadegh on his bed was a breath of fresh air between the ultra-grim Stalins, Churchills and Eisenhowers.

Fortunately, the turnaround in Persia does not change in this regard.

The Persian authorities, the news agencies reported, threw themselves on the ground kissing and weeping at the Shah’s feet. When the Shah saw this, he also wept.

Since the Lettres Persanes of Montesquieu, Persia has always had a certain influence on Western politics. [Persian Letters, famed 1721 French book by Montesquieu]

Politics needs tenderness.

Tears are better than polemics. Let us solve our political difficulties in a crying mood.

Imagine the axis Budget debates: Romme weeping, Burger sobbing loudly, Schouten wiping a tear, Tilanus with a damp eye and Oud — because of the opposition — laughing with tears. [Dutch politicians Carl Romme, Jaap Burger, Jan Schouten, Hendrik Tilanus, Pieter Oud]

This reflection is thanks to the August weather.
