Mossadeg willing to talk for £20,000,000
Express Political Correspondent
BRITAIN is not impressed by the latest offer from Dr. Mossadeg.
The Persian Premier’s new bargain is an offer to receive an Anglo-Iranian Oil Company delegation. For this he wants £20,000,000 down, and a further £29,000,000 at the end of the talks.
The delegation has to be sent out within a week, and the talks will be for a maximum of three weeks. Mossadeg insist that the Anglo-Iranian delegates will be accorded full powers to discuss the Persian government’s counter proposals.
The proposals referred to to by Mossadeg made no acceptable offer of compensation for the oil grab, nor provision for the future operation of the Abadan refinery and the marketing of Persian oil.
Officially, Mossadeg’s latest offer is still being studied by the British government, but there is little chance of any delegation leaving Britain on the terms lay down in the latest Note.
But though the Persians are in effect sticking to their blackmail demand for £20,000,000, their Note is couched in much friendlier terms than any of Mossadeg’s previous abusive messages.
He goes so far as to say that “It is expected that the complete good will of the Persian government . . . will be well received and made use of.”
