Tehran, Iran, Jan. 5 (AP)—Premier Mohammed Mossadegh in a fiery broadcast tonight accused recalcitrant deputies of trying to weaken his government and demanded a parliamentary vote of confidence tomorrow.

The Premier declared the vote would expose deputies whom he accused of fomenting disunity and threatening Iran’s independence at a crucial moment.

The blast came a few hours after Mullah Ayatullah Kashani, Iran’s powerful religious leader, endorsed a bill which would nullify the new election law Mossadegh intends to decree within a week. [Ayatollah Seyed Abolghasem Kashani]

The grim old Mullah—whose rift with Mossadegh is reported deepening—called the bill, aimed at preventing suspension of the present Parliament, “good and necessary.”

The bill was sponsored in the Majlis (lower house of Parliament) yesterday by 15 deputies, most of them former enthusiastic supporters of Mossadegh and appears to split the Premier’s National Front wide open.

Mossadegh declared today the deputies who backed the bill had given British propagandists a pretext to assert that Iran’s National Front was upset and that the Majlis no longer has confidence in the government.

The Premier called on all Iranians to show unity and alertness “at this delicate and momentous time.”

The 15 deputies have contended Mossadegh’s law would paralyze the quorum and alter constituencies, leaving some present members without seats.

Mossadegh supporters condemned the Kashani-backed bill as an unnecessary affront to the Premier and walked out during yesterday’s session to prevent its being voted on.

Kashani, who is in the hospital suffering from stomach ulcers, said today the draft bill’s approval would not create headaches for the Government, in view of assurances by pro-Mossadegh deputies that the Government does not intend to tamper with the Majlis.

Both the government and opposition press have reported lately that the Mullah is leaning “ever closer” to the extreme leftist elements. Recently he sent a message to the Communist-controlled Vienna “World Peace Congress” describing himself as a “servant of the Iranian people and Moslems of the Middle East denouncing Western imperialism.”
